wife material
Pennsylvania is zone 5. They grow outdoors just fine, right in the ground. Update: i realized maybe you're saying if you keep it in a pot, bring it in. If the pot is large enough, like home depot bucket sized, it'll survive the winter outside. I have one that's been sitting in the woods in a broken pot a little bigger than a bucket and it's been there for 3 winters and still alive. (Just saying, in case somebody wants to grow one but doesn't have indoor space over winter... just plant a tree! Put a berry under a thin layer of dirt, keep it watered, and it'll sprout.)
I'm in the situation that you were before your fantastic new pantry. Too many canned jars and bags/jars of freeze dried food and not enough space. We have them stashed everywhere with no place to build a pantry. We have done some shelves and racks in a closet and have rolling totes but nothing as large and organized as yours. I showed my husband this video and we're both so jealous LOL It really makes a difference when you're organized and can visualize what you have. Enjoy your much deserved new space!
This year I been making spaghetti sauce out of my Supersweet 100s. The family love it so much that I'm going to learn canning starting with those. I also found that bunching onions easily replace regular onions in recipes. Great video! Thanks for sharing. 😊
To much effort, dude on Primitive Technology just took chunks of sweet potatoes, put them in a pile of leaves dirt and rocks and let them grow. Grew just fine and from the looks went absolutely nuts.
Okra is one of my favorites anyway that they are made but raw is when you get the chance to taste the sweetest thing but anyway you make it is great
Thanks for the tips!
Mulberries are a delicious/terrible scourge to a manicured lawn/neighborhood.
Arent they invasive though?
I have a kitchen pantry, also converted my small home office to a pantry, another pantry cabinet in the hall, and about ready to convert my guest room closet like you. I grow, can, freeze dry for my household and my 3 kids households so yeah… it’s allot. Love your videos ❤
Wow! Great job mama. I know they appreciate it
You crack me up, I’m coming to your house for the apocalypse 😂 But seriously, that is amazing, I really want to start canning eventually. And awesome job by hubby! For your tomatoes, I saw another UA-camr make tomato powder from her tomatoes. She just dried them and ground them with a spice grinder. Said she uses it in place of tomato paste and puree. And said it’s good to add to soups and other things for added flavor. Also, you could always get a small wardrobe for your guests in the spare room to use now instead. Can’t wait to see the tea videos, I really want to do that too but have no clue. Please do a tomato canning one as well.
You got it! I actually do the same thing with tomato powder. I could definitely use more. Thanks for the reminder.
Blessing, blessing. I love your honesty ❤.
Thank you! 🤗
Thanks for the cooking demo for the taste of the white. I had bought a orange skin potatoe that was white inside. It has become my favorite.
I love trying all different varieties. You never know what you will like until you try.
So it looks like there's not much deep earth for the potatoes to grow ... I don't quite get how deep/shallow the planter you used is. Is there another vid where you can show where/how they grow in that thing? thx
Yes, I have a longer video linked to this short. The container is 12 inches deep.
We have so much in common. I'm in Brevard County and preserving so much food. I have taken over 2 closets, under one bed, an armoir and a metal shelf! Lol. I dehydrate, can, freeze but no freeze dryer yet. Anyhow, I saw your photo on IG, but cooler to see the video too. I'm Robin.Florida on IG. Love seeing another enthusiastic FL gardener.
Hi Robin 👋 I never really thought I would grow enough to have this problem but I’m loving it. It’s so much fun and it just makes me feel so accomplished. Congrats on all your success too!
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a I just enjoyed gardening, which forced me to learn how to preserve. It's a good problem! BTW, I like making juices and V8, too.
@@SouthernLatitudesFLI’ve watched your channel too. Great job with your videos 💚
Great video. Would you mind doing some videos on the different ways you preserve food and how to use the various appliances. Than you!
Absolutely. I actually have a playlist on all my preservation projects. Check it out.
Can sweet potatoes cross pollinate?
No. We grow them from actual potatoes rather than seeds so those are considered clones.
I'm definitely going to try trombanzino squash next year. I am in a never ending nature with vine borers 😡. I think they are not as susceptible. Plus they look cool. I now have pantry envy 😁. It is hard to keep up with what you have if you can't easily see it.
So true and I’m in love with that squash now. Might be my go-to for all future squash plants.
Usually like your content, but there is an awful lot of product-peddling going on here. I've never seen affiliate links pop up on the screen during the video. I mean, do Walmart and Home Depot really need you driving sales to them? Just an honest critique, and my personal opinion. We get bombarded with ads everywhere we turn. Now we don't even get a break from it when watching gardening videos on YT.
I normally add the links because I usually get questions on the products I show so just trying to be proactive. Sorry it interrupted the video for you.
What a beautiful thing! Being a newbie I’ve been so amazed with my successes that I’ve been sharing most of my fresh surplus with family. It’s high time I start canning and dehydrating and keeping more for the pantry. Still on the fence regarding spending money on a freeze dryer. Maybe next year. Thanks as always for your help and encouragement. Congrats on your bounty!
The freeze dryer is great but it is pricey. Starting with canning and dehydrating is a great plan. Congrats on your abundant harvest!
I put in shelving like that and the shelves were fine for months and then one night we heard a crash and all of the can goods on the top shelve fell and took out all the ones underneath. Needless to say, I had to go back and rethink the process after that loss and put in a wood frame system. No more collapsed shelves.
That was my concern too but the hubby has confidence in them so we will see.
Hi! I am familiar with that shelf system. He did an excellent job installing it. The standards, the rods on the wall) look like that they are spaced about 16 inches apart. I bet he hit a stud behind those bad boys! So I would not worry at all.
@@kimberlyrusso2541yes! He attached them to the studs. He’s never failed me so I have faith. Thanks for the confirmation that they have worked for you 💚
I've been trying to find good producers, this year, just got tromboncino seeds yesterday, great to see you like them!
They are the best!
Awesome idea for your pantry. What is the liner that you used onto of the shelf’s?
It’s a no slip shelf liner to keep anything from slipping. I got it on Amazon and cut it to fit. I’ve added it to my Amazon store under the Kitchen section (link in description)
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a thank you so much for answering my question.
Love the pantry! You could make Bloody Mary mix with your tomatoes! That’s on my to do list this year. And I’m growing cucamelons for the first time and I think it would be cute to pickle them to add to the Bloody Mary drink and have it look like a mini watermelon hanging off the glass.
Oh my gosh that’s such a cute idea! Love it
I’d definitely love to see a Bloody Mary mix! Yum 🤤
I just love how neat and organized you are. You always inspire me to do more! I so wish I lived in FL and could tour your garden. 😊
I’m only that way with the garden and kitchen. My office is a mess though 🤣
This is my dream. I'm only on year 2 of growing, in Florida. First year hardly produced anything but did teach me a lot. This year I was able to produce enough food to eat from my garden but not surplus. I'm getting better, more knowledgeable, so I'm hoping this fall season I will thrive and be able to start canning my food. I'm getting closer with each season. Thanks again for all your knowledge, tips and tricks.
You are making great progress. Before long you will be storing jars under your bed too 🤣
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a 🤣🤣
Your husband is an incredibly thoughtful & skilled man. You make a very effective team ❤
I’m incredibly grateful for him. He’s really the best.
Do you think clipping off some of vine would have sent more energy to making potatoes?
I’ve heard that theory and I’m testing that this year. Hopefully I’ll be able to prove/disprove that.
Thanks for the video. Ya'll are so smart.
Thanks for watching!
I LOVE this video! I just finished rearranging/organizing my pantries. I have places where more shelves could be installed - now to get my husband to do it! One pantry is in our large walk-in closet, and the other used to be a linen closet in the hall. Also have the typical 3 bedrm/2 bath Florida home, and a small yard.
It’s amazing how much you can grow and store in a typical home. It’s very encouraging
Sweet potato leaves are edible, too.
Yes! They are soooo good
Wow, you have officially crossed the surplus threshold for a single family! 😂 Excellent work!! Most Florida homes do not come w decent pantries, we, too, have had to build one in every home we've lived in here. Perhaps bc many of the builders came from colder climates & assumed we wouldn't stockpile food like they have to do in those places 🤔
I never considered why they don’t make big pantries here but that makes a lot of sense.
What an awesome way to be challenged.
This is so awesome Petrina! Guess that means you’ll be taking a break from growing for a season?? 😆😆
🤣 NEVER! Lol
😄
As a lifelong Florida kid… I’ll never forget going to a friends house & she had them SO HUGE u could actually CRAWL inside of it like a massive canopy (reminds me of those circular clothing racks we use to hide in as kids at Walmart) It was a sleepover; everyone had moved into the house… her mom noticed I was missing…she was looking for me everywhere & started to panic until her dog showed her where I was… I had been held up under there for God knows how long just SHOVING mulberry’s into my mouth. She walked in to see my completely stained black mouth + fingers like 👁️👄👁️
What a great memory!
Authored any books?
Not yet but I’m working on one. 💚
Would like to ask for help in obtaining the roselle seed or plants. Where do you get yours from? I would like to see if you could also make a video on care and maintenance of the roselle. It’s a plant that isn’t common.
I usually get mine from theurbanharvest.com. I’m hoping to do a full video on them this fall when they are a bit bigger
I had a wild one grow outside (itbears white fruit) but its been 8 years and still no fruit and I do now know why
Para que sean mas dulce debes dejarlas guardadas por algun tiempo, saludos
💚
I have been all my life. I've gotten most my earth boxs planted rain stopped me a couple times. So I'm gonna get some done this weekend. And try to get the ungrounded bed ready. If the good lord willing and the creek don't rise
Stay dry out there and good luck 🍀
Mulberry trees used to be all over Perth, some also grew wild on vacant blocks when I was a kid in the 70’s. We’d have a feast and then go home covered in juice stains much to the disdain of my mother. They’re so sweet & delicious!
What a great memory!
So delicious. Unfortunately I can't eat them.
😢
I just got my greenstalk5 today. Would it be smarter to wait until we get past the viscous Florida heat? Planning for herbs, strawberries, and greens.
They do require watering more often during the summer but if you start out with a soil like Promix or peat moss and you grow varieties that enjoy the heat, you could start now.
There are different kinds of mulberries. Black, Red, and White are the most common. White being the most hardy, down to zone 3, Red being the sweetest taste, and Black being the fastest grower along with typically yielding the most berries.
Thanks so much for that info. Mine are black so that explains why they got so big so quick
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a glad the information was useful!
how do you keep your lawn grass out of your raised beds?
I placed a triple layer of cardboard at the base of my beds when I put them in and that helps. Sometimes I do have to weed it out but not often
These are invasive in north america so I’m not surprised they grow with a vengence
Mulberries LOOK like raspberries, but the ones I have tasted are disappointingly bland. There are varieties certainly hardy in z 5. You may also regret planting them over sidewalks, paved paths, etc., because the berry stains won't come out of concrete with just a few rains. Getting the stains out of clothing will be even harder. Even before falling to the ground, mulberries have very tiny insects crawling over the fruit, they don't seem to damage it, but the ick factor might be a factor. Plunging them into ice water might solve that issue.
I try not to think of the bugs as I eat them off the tree 🤣
What brand of compost do you have and where did you buy it Please and Thank you
Black kow is what I normally go for if I need to buy it. Otherwise, I make my own with my compost tumbler
